I have a prescription for Ritalin, (methylphenidate) and I take it how I'm supposed to . It makes everything perfect for me, but It wears off really fast. (20mg 1 time a day) and I go back next week to the shrink. Any Ideas to get my dose upped to 20mg 3 times a day? Thanks.
Answer:
20 mg isn't very much, unless you are a child. There are time release medications similar to Ritalin that last 8 hours, and now they have a patch. But remember, These meds can interfere with diet and sleep. Sleep and a healthy diet are just as important to your condition, so you should have most of your day unmedicated. Make sure you are using the hours well, during school or work. Don't believe what you hear about it being addicting, you are taking a medication in controlled amounts. Drug abusers take more and more everytime. There is a big difference and many ignorant people do not understand the difference.
Were you not told this is highly addicting drug? Prescription or not.
Call your doctor, he can tell you over the phone if it is ok to increase the dosage
Never up the dose without doctors approval. Talk to him I'm sure he will listen. There is a time release ritalin that might work for you. Most people take it at least two times a day.
The reason you are only being given it once per day is because if you take it too late in the day, it will cause you insomnia and possibly other side effects that are not pleasant.
Ritalin is only meant to get you through you school or work part of the day. Your body needs rest from the drug the rest of the day. And over time you will have build up anyway.
They may give you either a larger dose is the morning, or one other dose to take at noon. But I'd recommend sticking with the one dose of 20mg.
You really don't want to get addicted to a drug...trust me. Just do as your doctor says.
How about telling your doctor that you feel really great when the Ritalin kicks in, but when it wears off, you backslide...
Or ask if there is a long-release version that will have the same effect as taking it two or three times a day.
